To push the visitor to the western part of Sicily are as many combinations of history that form a beautiful landscape, with endless views. On the extreme tip of the island there Marsala with its giallotufo colors, Azzurromare, rossotramonto, biancosale, verdevigneto. From Phoenician - with Greek influences, Roman, Arab, Norman, Swabian, Angevin, Spanish - Marsala is rich in artistic and unique, unique content.
Strong of its archaeological and environmental, Marsala preserves testimonies scattered in a geographically unique place, where nature expresses itself in its multiple characters. The artistic heritage that the area has to offer is wide: churches, caves and shrines; tombs, baths and sunken roads; statues, amphorae and shipwrecks; cemeteries and places of worship. From the Stagnone Lagoon and to the historical center covers an immense ancient area - partly recovered, but many still submerged - that coexists with the modern urban complex.
legendary land in the heart of the Mediterranean, Marsala stands on Capo Boeo. On the one hand protects Erice, on the other embrace Segesta and Selinunte; looks to the nearby Egadi Islands (20 minutes by boat, daily connections) and to Africa (the Tunisian coasts are just 80 miles). Has in the sea one of its main economic and tourist resources, while agriculture, with its eight thousand hectares of vineyards, supplying the wine industry: more than one million hectoliters a year of white, red and fortified wines, including noble marsala. If we run through briefly the history of Sicily, it is easy to detect the importance of Marsala that has its roots in the fourth century. C. From the sea come the Phoenicians to settle in the island of Mozia, the archaeological gem Stagnone, that the Carthaginians fail to defend the siege and destruction of Dionysius the Elder, tyrant of Syracuse. It is the 397th. C., and the few survivors are moved on the nearby promontory of Capo Boeo, where they found Lilybeo.
Under Roman rule, then, flowers trade and develop business; while with the arrival of Arab pirates - VIII century - the city is renamed with the name of Marsa Allah (Port of God), according to other Marsa Ali, hence the current name. In 1773, the history of Marsala walking hand in hand with one of the same wine, thanks to the English: first John Woodhouse, then Ingham and Whitaker, discover and enhance the oldest of Italy Doc. Ten years later, the Florio will be the first Italian to market marsala.
With the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldi - May 11, 1860 - this city began to write one of the most beautiful pages of the Risorgimento, a year later, it culminates into united and republican.
Today Marsala still retains its archaeological, maritime, Garibaldi. It is a city of wine, flowers, salt, strawberries and ceramics. Here, colors, flavors and fragrances of Sicily meet in a territory, between Old Town streets and villages of the hinterland, continues to cultivate the typical Mediterranean hospitality.
